Translation Memory Tools

Technical Translations make great use of translation memory tools both as a means of keeping the costs to our clients as low as possible, but also as a digital repository for client glossaries, style guidelines and document management.

A translation memory (TM) is a linguistic database that stores segments of text such as sentences, paragraphs, headings and titles which have already been translated.  Translation memories store the source text segment and its corresponding translation for future use.  All memory records are client and language specific, meaning that we create and maintain translation memories on behalf of each of our clients.

Translation memories are not a replacement for human  translation, rather a tool used to assist the human translator by laying out text to be translated in a readily editable format, identifying previously translated text and also providing tools for checking consistency or terminology.  The use of translation memory tools by a human translator should not be confused with what has become known as machine translation, Technical Translations only ever uses human translators skilled in the particular subject matter and terminology required by the client.  Our translators will make use of translation memories provided by the translation project manager, who creates and manages each client translation memory on their behalf.  For more detail on the difference between machine translation and the use of translation memory tools, click here.

Not every project is suited to the use of memory tools, however, the client cost saving can be hugely significant over the long term, so wherever possible we will make use of our memory software.

  • Increased translation quality, as the same terminology and descriptions are used throughout your translated material.
  • A considerable reduction in turnaround times, as translators do not have to re-translate every repeated sentence or paragraph.
  • Potential dramatic cost savings on repeated text and translation memory matches: we offer a 65% discount on all repeated segments and 100% matches with the memory and a 35% discount on all partial matches with the memory meaning the larger your memory becomes the more cost savings you will enjoy.

On average our regular translation clients will save over 50% of their translation costs by the structured use of translation memory to identify previously translated text, in context, and any repetition within a larger text in order to avoid having to translate the same paragraph more than once.

Working in a niche medical market and starting to export across Europe we had to ensure that our translated materials would be clear, concise and reflective of the medical terminology. From initial inquiry to a finished product took only 10 days and we were very impressed with the professionalism, assurances and the speedy turnaround of Gemma and her team. Thank you!

Ceramic Drying Systems

CDS Group design and manufacture specialist industrial ceramic drying systems for a growing international market.  CDS contacted Technical Translations when they needed multi-lingual literature for an international trade show.  At that stage the brochures hadn’t been designed or the copy written so the process started with a technical copywriter and our in-house designer producing the English version before we then got to work on translations into various languages including Arabic and Chinese.

Nicky Dunne of CDS said “We operate in a very niche market and to produce our multi-lingual marketing materials we need much more than just a translation company – we need a team of people who understand our industry and also the nuances of how to get our message across to an international audience.  We were also up against a tough deadline so we also needed a really fast turnaround.

The service we got from Ben and the team was great, right down to personally delivering the printed brochures just in time to be shipped out to Germany for our trade show. I’m really glad to be working with the team at Technical Translations.”
