    • The Complications of Technical Asian Language Translation

      07-Mar-2011

Technical Translations carry out translation into many Asian Languages, but for exporters new to the Asian market the range of languages can be confusing.

The most common languages the for exporters to the Asian market are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Japanese and Korean

The next popular languages are the South East Asian Languages – Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Tagalog (Tagalog is the National Language of the Philipines)

Finally there are a number of more obscure languages like Burmese and Khamer which are more rarely translated.

When considering Translation of documents for the Asian markets, the most important question to ask is precisely where the target audience is located.

For example, in Hong Kong the population speak Cantonese dialect and write documents using Traditional Chinese characters. In Taiwan your audience will speak Mandarin but still write using Traditional Chinese characters whereas in mainland China the people write documents using Simplified Chinese characters. To further complicate matters there is a significant Chinese Community in Malaysia, who predominantly use Cantonese as their first language.

The team at Technical Translations take care where our translators and reviewers are based. For example a Hong Kong representative can’t be used to review simplified Chinese.

For document text which is being translated into both Simplified and Traditional Chinese the usual method adopted by Technical Translations is to translate into Simplified Chinese first, then have a Hong Kong based reviewer re-write the simplified text into Traditional characters and using traditional turn of phrase.
