    • Technology Mimics The Human Brain

      24-Aug-2011

Sci-fi writers have been toying with the idea of computers powered by the human brain – now thanks to IBM’s SyNAPSE project, the translation of this somewhat ghoulish conception into reality is getting one step closer.

IBM are trying to create chips that are capable of “cognitive computing”. This will allow them to instantly react and respond to external stimuli and events.

The two prototype chips created, translate advanced algorithms and silicon circuitry into something like the natural phenomena of spiking neurons and synapses in biological systems.

This enables the processors to "learn" from experiences, find correlations, create hypotheses and mimic the brain's structural and synaptic plasticity.

The leader of the project, Dharmendra Modha , says that IBM is looking to create "a system that not only analyses complex information from multiple sensory modalities at once but also dynamically rewires itself as it interacts with its environment - all while rivalling the brain's compact size and low-power usage."

One of the ideas put forward by Mr Modha, and in which this technology could be used, is a set of traffic lights that can "integrate sights, sounds and smells and flag unsafe intersections before disaster happens…
