As we come to the end of another year, we reflect on the technology that has made it onto our Christmas lists and looks set to pave the way for future trends. So what were the top gadgets in 2011 and also the new toys we can expect to see on the shelves in the coming year?
Nearly every child we know seems to be in possession of a Nindendo DS. Yes, love it or hate it, it is here to stay with a glasses-free 3D version appearing in the shops and with Nintendo 3DS sales figures (eventually) outstripping its predecessor.
Apple just had to be high on our list – it’s signature white wires are not merely confined to teenagers and the iPad2 is looking to translate into just such another success for the company as the iPad, assisted by a front-facing camera and A5 processor. Oh yes, and they’ve slimmed down the design too.
Microsoft is going to run Windows 8 (hang on, what happened to Windows 7?) on system-built chip devices and ARM-based processors. This must mean that they have tablets in their sights.
The Sagecom Sixty retro home telephone looks tasty and is the perfect blend of technology and classic style. Technical Translations haven’t made our purchase yet but this is a strong contender for our Christmas list.
Virgin has launched a digital recording service – and you can record up to three shows at once! Where will we all get the time to catch up on the viewing on offer? The “Tivo” technology also allows the viewer to pause and rewind live television.
Samsung has brought out an android-based smartphone which has a fingerprint-resistant touch screen – someone had to do it sooner or later. It boasts some other interesting technologies - a dual core processor for one.
Amazon’s Kindle looks set to dominate e-reader market and their most recent offering, the Kindle Fire, has particularly attracted the attention of the team at Technical Translations, with its rich colour screen and excellent price. If you love reading and you’re short of space, this is the gadget to buy!
Cloud-based businesses are booming and Fujitsu are obviously cognisant of the fact and the opening for a product to help the busy homeworker or worker on the move. They have a new smartphone offering, the F-70C, with full Windows and a two-year license for Microsoft Office 2010.
Small form laptops are becoming ever more versatile and refined. Asus’s Zenbook, launched in October and costing the best part of a grand, is clearly in the territory of the early adopters at the moment.
Motorola are also competing in the small and slim department with a new Razr phone, which is a remarkable piece of engineering. 7.1mm thin (we couldn’t say thick!), with an 8 megapixel camera and top of the range 4.3” display, it would fit very snugly into a generous stocking with quite a few of the other products mentioned here today… Merry Christmas!
