    • Technical Translations Report On Pharmaceutical Agreement

      A deal struck in Geneva between major pharmaceutical giants will translate into a legally binding co-operation in respect of vaccine production if approved by global health ministers in May.

      The report in the New Scientist describes how vaccine production depends on countries sharing virus samples with a network of labs that report to the world health organisation.

      Indonesia stopped exporting virus samples in 2007, complaining that big pharmaceutical companies would only use the samples to produce costly vaccines which their population could not afford.

      Under the terms of the agreement reached this week pharmaceutical firms have agreed to use 10 percent of their manufacturing capacity to supply poorer countries with cheap or free drugs.
