    • Technical Translations Report: £15.00 Mini Computer Developed To Help Teach Programming

      07-May-2011

Emergent technologies seem to increasingly be translating into the tools used at the forefront of modern education and Technical Translations have learned of another new and interesting contribution from the man behind Elite, Kinectimals and Rollercoaster Tycoon, veteran software and games developer David Braben.

This is a miniature device aimed at promoting learning and a better understanding of computer programming, a computer as small as a USB stick which could be available for as little as £15.00. It has a USB port at one end and an HDMI connection at the other, allowing it to be connected to both a keyboard and a monitor. Although its output is necessarily limited by its small size, the mini PC can browse the web and run Office-style applications.

It is produced by a charitable group called Raspberry Pi who have stated that: “We plan to develop, manufacture and distribute an ultra-low-cost computer, for use in teaching computer programming to children. We expect this computer to have many other applications both in the developed and the developing world,” Work is currently continuing on the product and Raspberry Pi hope to be able to start distributing the device within the next 12 months.
