    • Technical Translations Hear The FDA Under Pressure To Ban Orlistat

      25-Apr-2011

The FDA is being pressurised to ban the weight loss drug Orlistat (marketed as Alli and Xenical), following new research by the University of Western Ontario.

According to the research, the use of the drug has been linked to increased risk of liver and kidney problems and the FDA's own Adverse Event Reporting System received 32 notifications of serious liver injury, thought to be caused by using the drug, between 1999 and 2008.

This is not the first medical study to point to links between Orlistat use and liver damage, according to the New Scientist.

As the only diet drug approved by the FDA risks to consumer health must be carefully balanced against health benefits as excess weight can translate into a considerable number of diseases. To help them assess the extent of the possible problems and side effects they have been asking both healthcare professionals and consumers to report adverse effects for some time.
