A sister organisation to our own ITI, the Australian Institute Of Translators And Interpreters, which was founded in 1987, is the professional association for translators and interpreters in Australia, offering more than 30 languages delivered by over 750 professionals. Members of the association serve translation and interpreting requirements throughout the country and had the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
AUSIT provides an important focal point and a meeting place for the Australian translation industry, allowing translators and interpreters to connect with Government, business and educational language users alike. The organisation has a broad range of activities. It importantly functions to assist with the development of international policies likely to affect the future of the translation profession, and takes part in various initiatives to promote and support translation associations throughout the world.
It also helps to regulate and maintain operational standards for Australian translators and interpreters via its Code of Ethics. The Code has been endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and other local organisations, including:
Commonwealth Government Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS)
Attorney General’s Department
Refugee Review Tribunal
NSW Law Society
Centrelink
NSW Health Care Interpreter Service
Associated Translators & Linguists
Institute of Modern Languages at The University of Queensland
