    • Retranslation of Mass Causes Confusion

      12-Nov-2011

The Catholic Mass has been retranslated and with over 200 changes to the phrases the priest has to say and many new translations for the traditional responses from the congregation, many churchgoers are feeling confused and displaced by the new version they are expected to adopt within the next few weeks.

The new missal, which is a collection of prayers, chants and instructions for addressing God, has been translated again to allow for a more formal and poetic approach. And there is no getting around it for English-speaking Catholics the world over. Worshippers will be using the text from the first Sunday of Advent, November the 27th, and this new translation is the only change to the missal in the last forty years. The last time it underwent translation work was in the late 1960s when it was translated from the original Latin documents into English, to make it more accessible to worshippers the world over.

Although the new translation is already in the pews, this time there will be workshops and events all over the Catholic world, to help familiarise churchgoers and service leaders with the reworking of the texts.
